Exercise and its Role in Fighting Diseases

In today’s fast-paced world, a sedentary lifestyle has become very common. Incorporating exercise into our daily routine and dedicating time to exercise are crucial. Unlike in the past, when daily activity was a natural part of the routine, we must now consciously incorporate exercise into our routines for a healthy life. Today’s lifestyle, sedentary living, stress, and poor nutrition have contributed to the surge of diseases like heart disease, obesity, diabetes, stroke, mental health diseases, and cancer. Exercise is an important, accessible, and powerful tool for preventing disease, maintaining health, and improving quality of life. Understanding the role of exercise in mitigating the risks associated with conditions such as diabetes, obesity, cancer, Alzheimer’s, stroke, and heart disease is necessary to adopt regular exercise in our lifestyle.

What is Exercise?
Exercise is any planned, structured, and repetitive physical activity designed to improve and maintain fitness and health. Exercise includes moderate-to-severe-intensity activities. It includes brisk walking, swimming, hiking, jogging, running, cycling, and strength training/resistance training. All types of exercises are beneficial to our physical and mental health. Moving your body and exercising also plays a great role in stress reduction.

Benefits of Exercise -
Exercise offers numerous benefits; it helps in weight management, improves fitness and energy levels, improves mood, reduces fatigue, and also improves overall physical health. Exercise strengthens the cardiovascular system, improves lung capacity, increases muscle strength, improves bone density, and boosts metabolism. It reduces stress, anxiety, and depression, promotes better and deeper sleep, and improves cognitive function. In addition, exercise improves immune function, reduces cortisol, improves insulin sensitivity, and improves hormone balance in the body. All of these benefits, along with reduced inflammation from exercise, lead to reduced Cancer risk. Exercise plays a vital role in preventing and managing several chronic diseases.

Role of Exercise in Fighting Diseases -
Regular exercise plays a crucial role in mitigating the risks associated with major diseases like -
1) Diabetes - Regular physical activity and exercise improve insulin sensitivity and help regulate blood sugar levels. Aerobic exercise and strength training reduce the risk of Type 2 Diabetes mellitus by managing body weight and improving glucose metabolism. Moderate exercise like walking for 30 minutes
five times a week and strength training 2-3 times a week can significantly reduce the risk of Diabetes.
2) Obesity- Exercise plays an important role in weight management. It burns calories, preserves muscle mass, regulates appetite, and improves bone strength. Regular physical activity with a balanced diet can play a significant role in preventing and managing Obesity. Obesity is a root cause of several diseases, and exercise can help prevent it to a great extent.
3) Heart disease - Exercise reduces blood pressure and cholesterol levels, improves circulation, and strengthens the heart muscles. Regular physical activity lowers the risk of Coronary Artery disease, heart attack, stroke, and also increases the overall cardiovascular endurance.
4) Stroke - Exercise improves circulation, maintains healthy vessels, and reduces. arterial stiffness. This reduces the risk of blood clots and high blood pressure, thereby reducing the risk of Stroke.
5) Alzheimer’s disease - Exercise has neuroprotective effects and improves brain health. It improves blood flow to the brain, promotes the growth of new neurons, and supports cognitive function. Studies show that individuals who exercise regularly are at lower risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
6) Cancer - Regular exercise helps maintain a healthy weight, balances hormones, promotes immune function, and reduces inflammation; all of this contributes to reduced Cancer risk. Studies have shown that regular exercise is linked to reduced risk of certain Cancers like breast, colon, and endometrial cancers.
In addition to the above-mentioned diseases, exercise also plays a crucial role in preventing Varicose veins, Osteoporosis, mental health diseases, Obstructive sleep apnoea, etc.

How much Exercise is Ideal?
As per the guidelines of the WHO (World Health Organization) and AHA (American Heart Association), adults should aim for about 150-300 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic exercise or 75-150 minutes of vigorous intensity aerobic exercise. In addition, strength training 2-3 times a week is ideal. It is important to remember that regular, consistent exercise is better than intense exercise lasting for only 2-4 days. Exercise should be incorporated into our daily routines, and this routine should continue for the rest of our lives.

Limitations and Cautions -
While exercise is generally safe for most people, some individuals may have to be assessed by their doctors before following any exercise programs. This includes individuals with heart disease and reduced heart function, individuals with muscle and joint problems, pregnant women, older adults, and individuals recovering from a major surgery, injury, or illness. Your doctor may have to assess and recommend safe
exercise programs for you. In addition, it is important to remember that moderation is key. Excessive exercise without adequate rest may lead to fatigue and weakness. Moderate exercise regularly, and with consistency is ideal to maintain a healthy life.

Thus, exercise is an incredibly powerful and readily accessible tool to improve and maintain your overall health. Exercise is an investment of time and energy to maintain and improve your physical and mental health, improve longevity, and quality of life.
